VALLO ALPINO - BLOCKADE

"PASSO DEL CALVARIO"

Passo del Calvario

Blockade (Sbarramento) "Passo del Calvario" (Leskova Dolina)

Situated near height 862, defending the crossroads on the road that from Case Massun goes eastwards, over Mt. Calvario pass and Dolina dei Noccioli (Leskova Dolina) toward the border. It includes two separate underground forts, a number of field-type MG and HMG nests, an open AT position and passive AT defences (concrete cylinders, AT mout and minefields).

Fort No. 1: N side of the road, consisting of two combat blocks, each armed with one HMG placed in steel casemate almost flush with hill slope. One observatory concrete block with safety exit. Underground (logistical part) including caserne with ammo, food and drinking water storage. Generator room situated near the entrance block. Air filters and gas-proof doors for anti-gas defence.

Fort No. 2: S side of the road, six combat blocks: three HMGs in steel casemates, two HMGs in steel turret, one 57/43 mm Nordenfeld AT gun in concrete block, one 47/32 mm AT gun in open position. One observatory concrete block with safety exit. Underground (logistical part) including caserne with ammo, food and drinking water storage. Generator room situated near the entrance, air filters and gas-proof doors for anti-gas defence.

Present state of the forts:

fully accessible (in winter time depending on the amount of snow, but this road is more important than other ex-italian military forrest roads, and therefore a bit more accessible). AT positions preserved, but all casemates blown up, steel turret removed. Logistical parts in reasonably good shape, not too unsafe. Access stairways towards destroyed positions blocked by debris. Vertical access ducts are to be negotiated carefully, especially the one leading towards turret position. Remains of combat blocks overgrown, but AT obstacles still visible.
